Boston's Sustainable Business Leader Program accepted 27 companies from ten Boston neighborhoods in June 2008.  Participants are receiving technical assistance for one year.  An SBLP coordinator conducts a sustainability assessment in these six areas:

  • Energy Efficiency

  • Water Conservation

  • Recycling/Waste Reduction

  • Transportation

  • Pollution Prevention

  • Sustainability Management

Based on recommendations from the assessment, each business is creating a Sustainability Action Plan.  Upon successful completion of the Action Plan, which may take up to one year, a business can be designated "Sustainable Business Leader".

Program Updates

The Boston Sustainable Business Leader Program is for small and mid-sized businesses that want to become more sustainable.  On this website we will post the sustainability assessment, resources for implementation, case studies, and program updates.  At the end of the program we will prepare a report with lessons learned and recommendations for expanding this effort to many more businesses.

www.greenerchoices.org

Under "toolkit" click on "calculators."

Or you can use EPA formulas rounded to the nearest decimal:

Electricity 1 kwh = 1 pound CO2

Natural Gas 1 therm = 11 pounds CO2

Oil/Diesel 1 gallon = 22 pounds CO2

Gasoline 1 gallon = 20 pounds CO2

or Gasoline (23 mpg vehicle) 1 mile = 1 pound CO2

Flights 1 mile = .7 pound CO2
