Katsiroubas Bros. makes its living off a healthy environment. So it only makes sense the Boston-based produce and fruit wholesaler is making a concerted effort to reduce its own carbon footprint.
The company’s efforts have been large and small. It switched all its cleaning products to nontoxic versions. It installed a new monitoring system to reduce the peak demand of kilowatts by its warehouse compressors. With help from NStar, it replaced all its lighting with more efficient products, reducing usage by 92,972 kilowatts and cutting its bill by about $13,640 a year. The company also has reduced computer usage, added weather stripping to dock doors and installed low-flow showerheads and faucets. Outsourced trash-services provider Save That Stuff helps the company with composting and recycling efforts, allowing it to trim one dumpster load a week.
“Everybody in some way or another is affected by the environment and how it’s going to be tomorrow as business owners. Ours just happens to be pretty obvious being in produce,” said Ted Katsiroubas.
“Especially when the economy is not good it’s a pretty clear way to reduce your costs, and also be doing something better for the environment,” added Torry Katsiroubas.
